Effective, Ethical Marketing For Attorneys
Looking Outside the Box
Don't Be Afraid to Challenge the Rules
Category: Looking Outside the Box
When it comes to running a law practice and developing your marketing, doing the same thing as everyone else will cause you to be viewed as the "average" law firm. For example, if you paid for a Yellow Pages ad, the first thing you would probably do is look at the other ads listed. However, how smart would it be to just copy the other guy? After all, the majority of the ads already look virtually the same.
According to Earl Nightingale, if you went into an occupation or a profession with no mentor and you didn't know how to be successful, the best thing to do would be to look around to see what everyone else was doing, then do the opposite. If you don't know who the successful people are, your approach should be to do something different. You don't have to be the same as all of the other lawyers out there.
Don't be afraid to challenge the industry norms. Why do you have to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Do you really have to join all of those committees to get your name out there? These are some of the things we have accepted as the norms, but that doesn't mean you have to follow them.
When it comes to your business and your lawyer marketing efforts think outside the box. It is up to you to make the type of law practice and life that you want.

Great Legal Marketing's JumpStart 2010 Conference Has Officially Sold Out!
A Waiting List is Forming Now.
I'm excited to share some big news with you today. With a final surge in registrations just after the holidays, JumpStart 2010 is now sold out. This marks the fifth consecutive GLM conference event to sell out (and the earliest).
The GLM conferences have proven to be the best on the planet for lawyers who are success-minded and self-reliant and who are committed to building thriving practices.
If you missed your chance to register, I do want to let you know that all hope may not be lost. In the past we've sometimes ended up with a few last-minute cancellations due to an unexpected emergency or a change in a trial schedule, so we've gone ahead and set up a waiting list.

Stephen Fairley says "Be the Center of Influence"
Category: Looking Outside the Box
The Rainmaker Institute's Stephen Fairley and I recently chatted on a coaching call. One BIG point Stephen made was that you need to be (and, I would argue, its easy to be) the "Center of Influence" in your community.
Here are some notes from that part of the interview.
Is Coming to One of Ben Glass's Legal Marketing and Practice Building Conferences Right For You?
Category: Looking Outside the Box
We've sold out our last four conferences and moved to a bigger hotel, but that does not mean that this is the right place for you. People who come to one of Ben Glass's marketing and practice building conferences generally fall in to one of two types of lawyers:
The first is someone who, upon discovering Ben Glass and what he does, usually by extensive use of Google and the search functions of YouTube, say to themselves "I've found it! The place that I always hoped existed and knew I would find one day. (You can do a Google search for Attorney Ben Glass just by clicking this link.)

Still Thinking About This Legal Marketing Conference?
Category: Looking Outside the Box
"My practice will never be the same. Your program sets it out step by step and helps to focus the marketing without all the blunders and the waste. I am so glad I found you." - Lisa Douglas, Cabot,
"I was very wary and skeptical of how this could help us with marketing our law firm...We just wanted to find something that actually worked...We not only left with excitement, a plan, a direction, and a new perspective on marketing, but received the tools, the vendors, the ongoing support and the exact map of how to implement their proven system of success..."
- Steven Joseph, Ocoee, FL

Are You one of the 99% of Lawyers Predicting Monstrous Effects from the Recession?
Category: Looking Outside the Box
The ABA has the results of their survey of the lawyer profession and the recession.
Entirely predictable and this will get wide play in the press.
I'm not surprised that only 1% have chosen to "not participate" in the recession.
Here's my question for those who voted "victim:" What have you done in the last 24 hours to improve yourself or to drive more law clients to you.
If you answer is "nothing" then SHAME ON YOU.
Dan Kennedy: "Stop the Holiday Talk About the Recession"
Category: Looking Outside the Box
Dan Kennedy, world famous marketing and business building guru and the co-author, with me, of the Ultimate Success Secret, has a few tips for squelching the "downer, woe is me" recession talk at this year's holiday parties.
In the latest edition of his "No. B.S. Marketing Letter" (available here, with tons of free gifts) Dan suggests these two questions to squelch the moaning and groaning::
Ask the person who is trying his/her best to rain on the party:
1. What are the five things you've done most recently to follow up on past customers/clients/patients/donors?
2. What are the five books you've obtained and studied most recently to somehow improve your lot in life?
They'll shut up.
Time Management for Lawyers

Just how do highly successful attorneys get it all done? They are the ones with the most client and referrals and they seem to take it all in stride.
I had a discussion with several of my mastermind members and you can listen in on that discussion here.
DUI Marketing Teleseminar Thursday, September 11
Category: Looking Outside the Box
One of my mastermind members, Richmond, Virginia attorney Bob Battle, is a DUI defense attorney who has quadrupled his income using my marketing techniques. (Yes, I've seen all of his numbers and he's shared with my mastermind group exactly what he is doing. Now he has taken what I taught him (he's also a very serious student of Dan Kennedy and will be featured in a new book on marketing) and "niched" it for DUI.
He's taken all the guesswork and risk out of DUI advertising and created a simple, easy-to-follow, turnkey system that works (and that you'll be proud of). He's doing a teleseminar this Thursday to talk about what he does and to introduce a new, area exclusive, DUI marketing program.
I know you get plenty of emails like this but Bob's a straight up guy so you might want to listen in on the free teleseminar. (While anyone can listen in to the teleseminar, the marketing program itself is limited to experienced DUI attorneys. It is a national marketing program with a very high degree of integrity.)
DUI Marketing Teleseminar on Sept 11, 2008 @ 2 & 8 pm Eastern.
American Association for Justice Rejected This Ad...
Category: Looking Outside the Box
As many of our readers know, we have been advertising Great Legal Marketing for several months, using full page color ads in TRIAL magazine, the journal of the American Association for Justice.
Recently we changed the ad to emphasize results that real trial lawyers using our techniques have been able to achieve. The ad talks a little bit about the increase money that these lawyers are seeing in their practices. AAJ rejected the ad because it spoke about money.
We are trying to make a decision as to which way to go with the ad. You can see our Lawyer Marketing for Personal Injury Ad in TRIAL Magazine here here and take a really quick 2 question survey. Thanks

This will be 1 1/2 days of jam packed "Outside the Box" marketing for lawyers.

Confirmed speakers so far include:
Trey Ryder-- one of the most well known and sought after marketing consultants in the country. For years Trey has been teaching smart lawyers how to do Education Based Marketing.

What Could AirTran have Been Thinking
Category: Looking Outside the Box
Well, AirTran is certainly getting its share of "free publicity" today. Seems it kicked a crying three year old, and her family. off of a plane.
What could they have been thinking? What's next? A "germ detector" so that if you have a cold, you can't fly?
How Good Marketers Think
Category: Looking Outside the Box
Last week my Great Legal Marketing Mastermind Group met in Bloomington, Indiana for our twice yearly in person all day marketing meeting.
Not only did we get to visit and tour mastermind member Ken Nunn's office (a real testament to systems, creativity and "taking action") but we discussed everything from "Internet 2.0" to the size of fonts in print advertising. Basically, each of the group's members gets a chance to showcase what he or she is doing and or lay their marketing and practice building issues on the table for group discussion.
Woe is Me--All too Typical Response to Competition
Category: Looking Outside the Box
The Washington Post has a good article in this week's health column about the surge in "Minute Clinics." These are little health care clinics popping up in shopping malls, drugstores, etc.
Their pitch: If if ain't serious, come to us--it's a lot quicker and cheaper.

What's Basketball Got to Do With Marketing?
Category: Looking Outside the Box
This has nothing to do with business - or maybe everything.
Did you see the article about the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) basketball team? Just before the season began, it discovered that two of its top players had been kicked off the team for violating the schools code of conduct. That left the team with four legitimate Division 1 players on its roster.

Look Outside the Box
Category: Looking Outside the Box
A major problems with most law firm marketing is that we get our marketing ideas from looking at what other lawyers do. That's the reason why with most lawyer advertising you could lay that ads side by side and see that they are all pretty much the same.
